The Artificial Intelligent CHAT Generative Pre-training Transformer Disruption: Are you Ready for its Impact?

08.06.23

So how do you envisage AI affecting your business in the short and long term? The noise level keeps rising, with Al exploding on the scene and simultaneously reshaping the business world, higher education, society, and everyday life. There is a strong case that developments will follow Amara’s Law, where we overestimate the effects of technology in the short term and understate the impact in the long run.

Regarding the short-term, Microsoft founder Bill Gates has recently penned that the OpenAI’s GPT model is the most significant technological advance since 1980. He should know as Microsoft is closely tied to OpenAL with its $10bn investment, which created the ubiquitous GPT model. Moreover, the chatbot, launched in November 2022, can already act as your personal assistant by answering questions and producing a response in real-time.

It's undoubtedly mind-boggling that Chat GPT is already passing professional-level examinations such as Chartered Financial Analyst. It is disrupting universities with students using technology to write their assessments, with some universities encouraging its use and others trying to ban it.

So what does this mean to you? Do you remember the Russian Chess Grandmaster Gary Kasparov, who beat the IBM “Deep Blue” machine in 1996 but lost the next year to an IBM Supercomputer? We are now experiencing a revolution in real-time with more than 1000 GPT species developed by startups targeting every sector. AI, digitisation and automation are real, with many routine and medium-skill occupations disappearing or evolving.

Some may say that humans have won the race with technology in the past, so this is not a long-term issue, but scientists are not predicting that humans will do so in the future. Life-long learning is increasingly important, with the firm now needing to become an immersive Learning and Development environment. Regarding education, skills and knowledge AI offers opportunities but carries risks too.

Now back to your business. What are the implications for you?

1.     How can this new GPT technology enhance your products, services and customer experiences?

2.     How will you proactively create the appropriate learning and development interventions for your people resource to stay ahead?

3.     How will AI affect your external environment analysis during the strategy design process?
